Damsel in distress! Ceiling light wiring question

Hi Guys,

I've searched all over to no avail so I'm sorry if this obvious question, but here's my situation.

I just moved into a new condo and I have two places in my ceiling to install lights. Everything is pre-wired (it's a new construction fwiw). I've installed ceiling lights before so I thought this would be simple. I was wrong!

The first place has two wires: one white, one yellow, both with caps. Easy enough. I was able to install the light. It works just fine.

The second place has one wire (casing is red) with a cap. Then there are two other wires running through the recess, both white, but they're running out from one hole and into the another. So there's really only one wire I can connect anything to, the red one. I'm completely at a loss for what to do! Am I supposed to cut one of the white wires and use that to connect to the light? If so, how do I know which one?

If it helps there are three switches on the wall in the room. One controls the first light. Another seems to control a power outlet nearby. I have no idea about the third...or if the switch that controls the light might also be able to control both lights?

Can anyone help a damsel in distress??

Thank you!!

Ya on Chicago conductor code so I will fill ya in second with correct patterns the Yellow is used for switched hot conductor so that is not a issue there.

If red that can means unswitched ( hot all the time ) and take a look at the switch box near that junction box and look at the conductor colour you should find yellow or red there ( black or red or bleu is unswitched ) while Brown is used for travellers for three way switch useage.

If it helps there are three switches on the wall in the room. One controls the first light. Another seems to control a power outlet nearby. I have no idea about the third...or if the switch that controls the light might also be able to control both lights?

The two switches you did found and that fine now for third one you will have to take a peek to see what colour conductor and see where that goes.

As far for two white conductors I will not really take a chance to cut it until you know what netural source it is connected to so to advoid cross connection. ( if not too sure or it was a brand new place the electrician should assit you on the set up if they <condo assocation > will pay for it )

Merci,
Marc
