converting 120 to 240 for dryer

I just moved into a new (old) rental house and have a utility closet with all the correct hook-ups except only a 120 plug and no 240 anywhere in the house. The interesting thing is that in the fuse box, the fuses marked dryer is a double bar and it appears to operate that plug. Could someone have put a 120 where a 240 was? Will this be easy to switch? Thanks for your help.

1. Turn off the breaker.
2. Verify there is no power to the 120 receptacle
3. Take the cover off the box.
4. Unscrew and pull the receptacle out of the box.
5. Look to see how many wires are in the box.

I suspect that you will find four wires - black, red, white, and ground with pigtails from the black and white conductors and a wire nut on the red conductor.

Post what you find.
