Connection inside fluorescent t8 wrap
3 Attachment(s)

Long time reader. First time poster.

I have not been able to find a clear answer to this, so hopefully someone here can help me.

I have an unfinished space that has only been framed. No plans to finish it further. I mounted a fluorescent t8 wrap fixture vertically to one of the studs.

I brought power to the switch, then went to the light.

Is it code to make the connection inside the fixture? It is a covered fixture, wires are rated to 90C.

Please find attached some pics showing fixture closed, fixture open, and the connection in question.

Connections are typically made inside the fixture. Someone removed the knockout for when the fixture is mounted over a junction box. This needs to be closed off and the smaller 1/2" knockout used a proper cable connector.

Thanks Jim.

Got it. So the issue is not with the connection in the fixture, but rather how the cable enters.

There are no 1/2" knockouts :(

That fixture is rated as a junction box so you are permitted to make connections inside it. The cable must be clamped as it enters the box and any old holes closed up.

A 7/8" hole saw will make the proper size hole for a 1/2" NM connector.

It also looks like the cable needs to be secured within 12" of the fixture.
