Connecting a subpanel

I want to put a 100A subpanel next to my main service panel (to make room for circuits).

What size cable should I use to connect the subpanel - is #4-3 with ground adequate? Just wondering what I should ask for at the electrical supply place.

BTW, I doubt I'll ever need 100A from the subpanel - I'm just allowing plenty of headroom so I only do this once.

Why do you want to use "cable"?? #4 is not large enough for a 100 Amp feeder.

Install a short offset nipple (1" will do) and use some individual #3 THHN conductors between the panels, for 100 Amp capacity. You will only need a few feet of the wire.

Be sure to get some #8 green THHN for your equipment ground.
