Connecting a Ceiling fan to a Light Switch

Hi,

I believe I have a pretty complicated question and would really appreciate any assistance.

I just converted my garage into a room and am trying to install a ceiling fan. I currently have the wires from the breaker box connecting 3 new power outlets and the 3rd outlet wires go to the ceiling fan. I then have another wire going from the ceiling fan to the light switch.

Right now having the light switch on or off doesn’t make any difference. The ceiling fan and all the outlets are powered.

I have 2 questions.

• How do I get the light switch to control the ceiling fan?
• Once I do, is turning the light switch off also going to turn off my 3 outlets and if so is there any way to make it just control the ceiling fan?

At the ceiling fan, connect the white and the ground from the outlet to the fan white and ground. Connect the ground going to the switch to the ground at the fan also. Connect the white going to the switch to the black from the receptacle, at the fan box. Connect the black going to the switch to the black fan wire. Connect the white and black and ground to the terminals on the switch. This will allow the switch to control the fan and have no effect on the receptacle outlets. Remember to turn off the circuit before wiring.

That sure would make a big snap and trip the breaker. The diagram makes it look like the hot and neutral line conductors into the fixture are both connected to the switch.
