connect a pull chain switch to a click switch on pendant light.
I have a wall switch that controls two fans and a pendant light. The circuit runs from the switch to the first fan, then through the pendant, then to the second fan. The pendant has a click switch on it. I would like to add a pull chain to the pendant (without removing the click switch), and control the light with the pull chain independently from the fans. (I want the fans to stay on when i turn the light off).
First, how do I connect the pull chain to the click switch? Second, how do I connect this pull chain/click configuration to the circuit?
If the click switch has just a lock nut holding it in place you could replace it with a pull chain switch.
If you don't want to remove the click switch and the click switch handle cannot be activated with a string attached to it then you need to re-engineer the fixture to install a pull chain switch.
You would need to take down and perhaps dissassemble the light fixture.
A typical pull chain switch unit occupies a space about 1 inch by one inch by 1/2 inch inside the fixture. You would need to find a space inside that is not stuffed full of wires and where a hole just over 3/8 inch in diameter can be drilled through material no more than 1/8 inch thick to the outside with 1/4" side clearance all around the outside also for the switch to be mounted in.
A pull chain switch is not recommended if the fan blades are close enough that the chain could swing out or up and touch.
