Confused with dumb prob....

Ok... so this might be a really dumb question but its my question all the same so if you can help that would be awesome. I am having a mirror made for my bathroom remodel. I am having two four inch holes cut in it and plan to mount two sconce lights on it. The original plan was to hold mirror in place, mark EXACT locations where to cut for round boxes, then remove mirror and install boxes in wall, reinstall mirror then mount lights. My issue is the mirror will not be ready for pick-up untill two days before thanksgiving. New plan is to make large sloppy holes in general area box will go in wall and mount box to the mirror itself.

My question is will that box go through a 4 inch hole or does it need to be 4 1/16 or something? My hole saw set is out on loan right now and i dont want to but another one and waste lumber just to do a test fit!

Thanks for the help on my "stupidly easy" question, I never had to mount one of these in something i could not file or cut ir just jam through like drywall...

We normally mount the boxes to the wall first. then have the mirror installer take his measurements. the box could be flush with the wall behind. The mirror is not considered a combustible material. make sure your light covers the ring of the box too.

no i understand that and that was my original plan. The problem is that I need to have the bathroom done for Thanksgiving and the only may to do so was to order the mirror ahead of time then finish my electric. I would rather have mounted the box to the wall, but i also dont see any issue just cutting a clearance hole in the wall and mounting the box to the mirror, i just dont know if the box is going to slide through the hole. I know the mirror will be strong enough to support the lights, it is 1/4inch mirror and thats the same thickness of glass on my tv stand holding up my 60" so i dont see an issue with mounting it to the mirror.

Does anyone know if the box with slide through a hole that is exactly 4 inches?

your best bet is to measure the box and see!. or purchase the box and give it to the glass company this way its there responsibility. BOB

Agree with Bob, take the box to the glass company and make sure they cut the hole to fit the box. If your sconces will cover the outside edge of the box, then you might consider mounting the old work box on the outside of the mirror. If you do that, then just cut a small hole in the wall, small enough to poke the wire through. Once you hang the mirror, you can take a drywall saw and cut the sheetrock to fit the hole, install the box then the sconces.

You better cut the holes bigger than the box. If you install a bath bar type fixture, the lip of the cut in box will not be flush and the fixture wont sit flush.

Make sure there won't be a stud in the way of the box location.

Mirror guys can cut pretty darn close if you give then the right measurements. Give yourself as much slack as you can while still covering the holes with the fixture.

CAREFUL running mounting brackets across the mirror. I have seen them crack when the screw got tightened a bit too much.
