confused on adding a timed light switch

Hi all! So, im changing up some light switches to timed switches. I was doing fine until i ran into a box with 3 wires and the other 2 wires (white/neutrals were tied into 1)

so this switch has the 2 blacks the 1 red and 1 ground connected

the light switch i ordered has 2 blacks (like a basic toggle switch) I am not sure why one of the cable has a red load if there is no 3 way switch.

The other toggles were fine since i just connected the 2 blacks/hot and the ground.

can I just wire the red and black into one cable onto the light switch?

it looked something like this, sorry for the bad drawing. i can take a picture when i get back to work

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

The other switch had two screws? There were wires connected to those two screws.
Connect the new switch the same way.

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

thanks for the reply

so sadly, the new (timed switch) has only 2 black cables

the switch im trying to replace has 2 blacks, and a red...i have no clue why that red is there since it is not a 3 way switch ha ha.

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

A red doesn't always mean a 3 way. It is just another color for a hot. You might have had power in, power out and and switched red . We're the two blacks on the same end of the old switch?

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

If the old switch only had two terminals then two of the wires must have been connected to one terminal. Do the same thing with the new timer. Connect the same two wires to one of the timer connections and the third wire to the other one.

Does the existing switch have on and off stamped on it?

No on and off lettering anywhere. I can problalby move the black and red to the top and the other black to the bottom and will still shut on and off.

the little switch thingy is plain with no lettering.

I might just have to get an actual timed outlet vs the spring loaded timed switch. I just really like the spring loaded one since i can just turn it and not force to have a selection (my own weird ways haha)

the actual timed outlet has the normal 4 cabled. hot load neutral and ground,

but the one I would like to use is just 2 blacks. (equivalent to a normal 2 screw light switch)

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

so i have a better representation now

Im used to seeing light switches with 2 hots (black)

so the switch I have connects to those 2 blacks

but the problem is that switch has an red hooked up like this

so im a bit stumped now on why that red is there and how would I hook it up to the new timed switch with 2 blacks....

i hope this makes more sense. thanks for all of your help

A three way switch needs three wires. You are going to need a different switch.

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

If there are three separate screws on that switch it is a three way switch.
We can't see the important side. Could it be that one wire is under the screw and the other is poked into the hole in the back? If true then consider those two wires to be on the same screw and connect them together.

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

No. The red is definitely separate. It looks like the two black might be together and the red on the other terminal.

Re: confused on adding a timed light switch

ok got a sample diagram. so this is exactly how its hooked up.
So i should tie the 2 blacks together to the other black on the timed switch and the red on the other black correct?
