Conduit sizing

I am running #1 Aluminum cable 220 feet from my main box on my house to a sub box on my garage. I plan to use 3 #1 Aluminums for the primaries and neutral lines and one string of #6 aluminum for the ground and running through conduit under ground. Is there a standard as to the size of conduit required? When the power company ran the lines underground from the transformer to the house they ran 128 feet of #2 underground in three-inch conduit; was that required or just made it easier to pull?
