Clarify NEC wire-fill in j-box

If I come into a j-box with a wire, then splice it to another that then leaves the box, does that count as one or two towards the wire-fill maximum? In other words, in the eyes of the NEC, do I have one or two conductors?

Thanks for your time and patience in answering what I know is a very basic question. Common sense tells me that I only have one conductor in the situation I just described, but I could be wrong.

2 conductors. One coming in, one going out.
