Can anyone explain why my Fluke circuit alert goes crazy once in a while and shows everything as hot, (fixture, hot, neutral, ground)? The master electricians usually mumble "magnetic field" to me but I'm looking for a little more detail. Even bad guesses are appreciated. Thank you in advance. HS
Could be the detector is picking up on voltages caused by induction on the non-hot conductors, hard to tell. Put a decent multimeter on the others to test, my fluke would often pick up on stray voltages, but when metered would show only a few volts.
The hot conductor is close in proximity to the others, when there is an AC voltage on it, the magnetic flux caused by that voltage induces voltage on the other conductors. Good enough?
