Changing Soffit Fixture

Hello,
I am replacing a fluorescent light fixture above the kitchen sink with a pendant light. I will need to attach an electrical box in the soffit to wire the new pendant light. The soffit is 1/2 inch thick (bottom of a cabinet). How do I secure the box into the soffit? Thanks.

Changing Soffit Fixture

A pancake box is 1/2" deep. They are available in both new and old work styles.

Changing Soffit Fixture

Jim and joecaption, thanks for the reply. If I understand correctly, I will attach the pancake box to the bottom of the soffit. I can then run the cable down through the soffit and in through the top of the box. Should the cable be in a conduit from the pancake box back to the wall?

Right now the cable comes out of the wall (no box) and into the fluoresent housing with no conduit. Do I need a box where the cable comes out of the wall? Thanks.
