Changed electrical switch now powe to whole whouse is off
I changed an electrical switch thinking it was bad. I changed it and wired it the same way it was before turned the power on and turned it on nothing. I changed it back to the old one and wired it up the same now the power in the whole house turned off. What happened?!?

...this could be a very dangerous situation...what is your level of experience?

Bobka 11-09-2012 03:20 PM

..OK if you are comfortable working with electricity....turn off all the breakers....make a note not to turn on the breaker that opened turn main back on... and slowly turn on other breakers 1 at a time....Afirst guess is you shorted a ground or neutral to line...take apart the switch you installed and either call a pro or someone that can trace this out good luck be careful,,

Ok I'll try when I get home. What happens when I turn them off and turn them a back on and nothing happens. Also I took out the new switch and have the old one in. Should I take the original switch out and put the new one in or what. I'm a novice at electricity

Bobka 11-09-2012 03:50 PM should get someone who has some experience there....again I think you created a short circuit at the switch ....not all things at switches are as they appear....white condutors could be switch legs for example...saftey first ok? good luck be careful...

Can you post a picture of the wires,
and a picture of the new switch ?

If you are flipping off and on the main breaker and no power, call your power company to have them check the meter base, and the power going into the main panel if they can't find a problem outside. Worst case scenario, they will pull the meter until things are fixed.

Now of course, if you caused a dead short and damaged the main breaker, or one of the meter lugs, you will have to pony up and call an electrician.

Do you by chance have a disconnect outside?

This is the key comment in this thread so far. I think we walk on water with hot and neutral wires in opposing hands counseling on this in diy fashion from afar? I am guessing the OP has no testers. I fear he could get hurt.

Call a sparky. Be safe. The nature of the problem seems isolated so the visit should not be too outrageously expensive. I know this is a diy site but sometimes the best advice is to get pro help.

Well don't know what happened but came home as the power was back on without doing anything. I have no idea what happened or why it shut off and the. Turned back on
