Central air unit throwing breaker

Our central air unit recently started to throw the breaker occasionally. Now it sparks if we reset. We've replaced the breaker but has not solved the problem. Any ideas on what to check next with the unit?

Thanks!

If you replaced the breaker yourself you probably already have checked the condition of the wiring and connections in the panel and would be comfortable opening up the A/C disconnect box and checking all the connections and condition of wiring there. If all that looks good then check the wiring/connections in the A/C condenser itself. If all the wiring looks good then it sounds like the compressor and I'd have to punt to my HVAC guy.

I agree with Pete. Could be the cooling fan motor, contactor, or the wiring inside the condensor unit, but it's been my experience that the culprit is usually the compressor. There is a quick, easy test to check for a compressor windings to ground short that your HVAC tech should be able to perform.
