ceiling out of reach

I want to switch the chandelier hanging above my dining room table with the one above the stairs. The problem is that I can't safely reach the light box from which the one above the stairs hangs. Since the length of wire/chain hanging from both ceilings are perfect, could I detach and rehang them from the end which attaches to the fixture?

Hi and welcome, photos of this situation would help, but from what you describe, yes, it can be done.
As long as you (cut the power first) have the same attachments on both, they should interchange no problem.

Chances are no.

How would you attach the wires to the sockets?

I agree with JB, you still need to work with the connections under the canopy at the ceiling.
