ceiling light question
 

Hi, so this is my first time changing out a ceiling light. i recently bought two, one for kitchen, one for the bedroom. kitchen light had a positive, negative, and a solid copper ground. installation went fine, no problems. then i went to replace the one in the bedroom, this one has a black wire, a white wire twisted up with another wire (which is live), the black wire is not live, then there is also another stray wire, and a solid copper ground. not quite sure how to go about connecting these wires. there is a total of 4 wires, then a copper ground. the only wires that are live is the white one. the light i took down is from the 70's and wasn't color coded or anything. Can anyone tell me the correct way to install it please?

How did the wires used to be connected to the old light fixture?

What color is the live wire twisted around the white wire?

the old light had 4 wires, going to two bulbs, 2 wires went to each bulb. they were criss crossed and twisted together, so one wire from each bulb was twisted and was then twisted around the white/other wire, and the other two were twisted around the black wire

the wire that is twisted around the white wire has no color, i will take photos. thanks

sorry that was a mistake, the light that i took out had two wires, a brown one, which was twisted with the white/other
and a black wire, twisted with the black wire.

Wire color doesn't mean squat. Make sure the wire going to screw shell, this is the part that has the threads made into it(white goes to that screw or wire attached)
So that leaves the one tip in the center of the base of the screw shell, the hot goes here. So its the fartherest point in or an effort has to be made to touch this, its easily possible to touch the shell when changing a lamp, so you don't want it hot.

You posted pics as I was typing.
They made it simple for you. white to white. Then black to hot.
Now, you have old wiring there, the cloth covered insulation can crumble leaving bare copper that "can" create sparkles. pay attention and wrap with electrical tape if needed.
