Ceiling light/fan

Our ceiling light/fan combination has 2 white wires along with 1 black. The whites connect to each other as well as to the fan. What could having 2 whites mean?

Ceiling light/fan

One could be from the fan motor and the other from the fan light.

Answers based on the National Electrical Code. Local amendments may apply. Check with your local building officials.
