ceiling heaters

this house was built in the 70's with electric ceiling heater. I do not wish to use them. Do I disconnect the wires to the electricial box. If need to make a hole in the ceiling for a fan and or light fixture, will these panels be located in certain area that I should be careful with. How big are these panels.
It is a one level house with heater in every room. Help babie
