Ceiling fan wiring instalation

Hi,
I'm thinking of installing a ceiling fan in my living room. There is currently no light fixture in the ceiling. I have two rocker type switches on either side of the room that control the lower outlet of a 2 outlet recepticle (I normally have a lamp plugged in to it). I was wondering if I can run wire from the outlet or one of the rocker switches up through the wall and across the attic to the location for the ceiling fan. As you can tell I have no electrical experiance. Any help would be great.
Thanks, Todd

There are a couple ways to do what you want. Are you wanting control of the ceiling fan from the switches or do you want to control it from the pull cords or is it a remote controlled version?

You have a couple three way switches controlling the bottom outlet of your duplex, in order to have them control the ceiling fan would require the outlet to be switched on and off also.

Or you could change the duplex receptacle to an unswitched duplex and control the ceiling fan from the 3 way switches. This would allow control also with the pull cords for the light and fan when the switches are 'on'.

Or you could leave things as is and control the ceiling fan from its pull cords only by running a cable from the duplex constant hot to the fan.

You may do this. Only you can say if you can.

Typically I would remove the single gang switch box, run a 3 wire cable from there to the fan box (the 3 wire cable wouls allow for a fan/light unit if ever desired). Then install a 2 gang box with a separate switch for the fan.

Make sure you take the cable to the box with the switch leg and a neutral. This could get tricky. You need to take the switches out and make note of the number and type of wire/cables in them. There are a LOT of ways it could have been wired.
