ceiling fan w/lights

I have a ceiling fan in my dining room & the switch that turns it on has a dimmer. I've noticed that when I turn the lights on & dim them the lights flicker. I've actually had to change several bulbs because they just shorted out not even using the dimmer.
How do I fix this shorting out problem?

Flickering at low dimming settings is common, especially with older dimmers. It's considered normal behavior, though undesirable. What do you mean by "shorted out"?

Are these compact fluorescent lights?

CFL's will not work with dimmers unless the dimmer is meant for the CFL's or the CFL's are meant to be dimmed. Without compatibility, damage to either the lamp or the dimmer (or both) can occur even if you turn the dimmer quickly to high and later, quickly off.

If you use incandescents on a ceiling fan, you also need to get the bulbs that tolerate vibration. That may be why those are dying more quickly.

If they flicker on low dimmer settings, replace the dimmer. It's not serviceable.
