Ceiling fan w/light wiring
I had a fluorescent light in my kitchen that was powered by a switch in the kitchen and one in the hallway. I am trying to replace the light with a ceiling fan with light kit. I want the light to be powered by the switches, but the fan to be independent. I followed the instructions in the box for the wiring that I wanted, but I think those were for a 1 switch setup. The white wire from the ceiling that was used with the original light is no longer used and now neither the fan, nor the light work. There is a red wire in the ceiling junction box, but I wasn't sure what to hook up to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You already have 14/3 or 12/3, depending on what is used for your lighting on that circuit, so that you have a always powered Hot, not a switched hot, but the red could feed another lighting circuit in that room.

I should have said that I'm good at following instructions and that I don't know much about electrical stuff. I don't know what 14/3 or 12/3 are. I imagine they're wires, but I don't know what it means.

At this point, I would suggest either reading up by picking up something like the Black & Decker Complete home wiring guide, or hiring an electrician if you do not feel comfortable.

By what you have described you already have a 3 wire in the box what # we don't know. The box should have a black, red, white and bare. The 3 wire is what allows you to control that light from either switch.
If you pull one of the switches out you will see 3 wires connected instead of 2.

So lets surmise that the red and white were hooked to the florescent. On the fan you will need to connect the red to the black and blue on the fan( power fan and light) connect white from fan to white in box. Connect green in fan to bare wire (grounds).
If you want both fan and light on seperate switched I believe you will have to run an additional wire to the box to accomplish that.

Also, THANKS for your service!!

What do you have the white of the fan hooked up to if you capped the white that was attached to the old light fixture.

A picture of the ceiling box would be a real help. If you can't get a picture, tell us ALL the wires in the ceiling box. It seems as tho the 3 way wiring might run thru the ceiling box.
