Ceiling Fan Shimmies

i installed a ceiling fan alittle over a year ago, and i noticed just the other day that it is shaking alittle on med and high speeds, while turning counter-clockwise. clockwise rotation is fine on all 3 speeds. the base of the fan, where it meets the ceiling is not moving, just the motor itself. i know the motor is mounted in rubber, to compensate for vibration, so is this ok? i mean its not wobbling, just a shimmy. it was fine when i first installed it i checked all the fan blades, and they are tight, what could have changed? and why does it shimmy only when turning counter-clockwise?....bob

Did you check all the screws, the ones holding blades to brackets, and the ones holding brackets to motor?

i checked all the screws on the blades and on the motor, and they were tight. i snugged them a tad more tho, and still a slight shimmy. only thing i can think to do, is to remove the blades, and cover, and check the screws that hold the motor to the monting bracket. any other ideas?...bob

If the counter-clockwise rotation is the reverse flow (air blows toward ceiling), then this is not unusual. The air bouncing off the ceiling, usually only a foot or two above the fan, will cause the fan the wobble as air is directed back toward the fan.

The fan needs trimming. Google "trim a ceiling fan". You should get plenty suggestions on this subject.

Check the "box" that the fan is attached to. A poorly installed box, or improperly attached box, or simply, the wrong kind of box, can cause a ceiling fan to wobble..........

Example of proper box installation:

Alternative anti-wobbling method (if box install is correct):
