ceiling fan remote wall control wiring

I hung a fan/light to a box that formerly had only a light, controlled by 2 different switches. I am trying to install a remote wall switch at each location, the switches have 2 black and one green wire. the problem is at the switch boxes, since it is a 3 way switch, one box has 3 seperate wires, 2 of them are 3 strand 1black,1white,1bare. the other wire is 4 strand 1black,1white,1bare,1red. The other switch box has 1 wire, that has 4 strands 1black,1white,1bare,1red. I have fried 2 of these $30 switches already any idea how to wire it properly?

You can put the new switch in one location only.

EDIT: Maybe not. It might be doable.

Box B) The wiring described isn't simple enough to tell you how to proceed especially since you have removed the switches and posibly some wire nuts. Add the fact that you want these switches at two locations complicates it more.

One important question is, how many wires at the fan jbox?


Also, you need to describe in detail the wiring connections in the first box as there are several common ways to wire 3 way switches.


You may need a voltage tester to get back on track.

the fan box has 1black 1white 1bare,(used to be just a light). I do have a multi meter, as for the wires in switch "A" I do know one is the feed, one goes to the fan box, and the last (one withe the red wire) goes downstairs to the other switch, if that makes any sense.

Upon further consideration, unless the remote switch leads are labeled line in/line out, it probably won't work with two remote switches.


Use one switch.

In box A, disconnect the 3 wire cable leading to box B and cap all wires. Hook the switch leads to the two remaining blacks (power in and switch leg).

How bout this, I take the wires in box "A" (the feed, the line to ceiling box, and the line to box "B") and connect the colors all black together, all white together, all green/bare together, and cap off the red wire. In box "B" I cap off the red wire. Now for wall mounted remote control switch with 2 black wires and 1 green wire. At box "A" I connect 1 black wire from the switch to the black wire bundle, and attatch the other black wire from the switch to the white bundle, and of course the green wire to the green bundle. At box "B" I connect 1 of the black wires from the switch to the black wire from the box, then connect the other black wire from the switch to the white wire from the box and green to green. Each switch has a manual on/off switch, if both are on there should be power to both switch boxes and to the ceiling box. Is this close? I am a framer not an electrician
