Ceiling fan pull chains

I was talking to a buddy yesterday - he is a 2nd year apprentice in the IBEW - and he said that he didn't think that pull chains were allowed for ceiling fans anymore. Any truth to this? I had heard a few years ago they werent allowed in places like closets and stuff...

I tried looking through the code but couldn't find anything about it anywhere.

Usually in new installations, the minimum requirement is a switched receptacle. I believe the code language is "At least one wall switch-controlled lighting outlet shall be installed in every habitable room". 210.70 (a)(1).

If you provide a switched outlet, you can still have a pull chain operated fan/light. If it is a fan only, you can use a pull chain.

Thanks goose. The room already has a switched light, so I'm cool there. MY question was more geared towards the actual use of pull chains.

Are they allowed in closets?

Section 410-8(b)

Fixture types permitted:
(1) surface mounted or recessed incandescent fixture with a completely enclosed lamp.
(2) A surface-mounted or recessed flourescent fixture.

I give the code reference so that you can take a look at the diagram of permissible location in the closet.
