Question

Ceiling Fan Mouting

I have removed an old ceiling fan, probably from 1970s and wiring is too. The ceiling fan was mounted from a metal outlet/switch box. (BOX TYPE)It is mounted onto a ceiling joist. Is it okay to hang a new ceiling fan from this box???

No absolutely not, for many reasons.

Remove that box an install a fan rated box.

Since your existing box is probably close to the joist (I assume from your description) you will have the best luck with this type of box:

Post a picture.
Could be as simple as adding a 2 X 4 between the ceiling joist and screwing up into it through the box.

I agree, you dont need a ceiling fan rated box if the fan is secured to the framing.... you still need a box though.
