Picked up a ceiling fan tonight. Went to install it, and there's no ground wire on the fan, just white, black, and white/black striped. Did I just get a defective fan, or is there a way to install this without the ground?
Normally an electrical device comes with installation instructions, including a one line electrical diagram that would clearly show how to install the ground, if a ground is required (see previous post). If you do not have the installation manual, check on the internet, it may be available from the manufacturer. In some cases, there is a ground screw on the device to attach the ground wire to (that is how my dishwasher was wired).
Thanks for the info guys. There are instructions, but they're fairly generic, so I wasn't sure how to read them for my specific fan. I had just panicked when I pulled the fan out and didn't see a ground. Reread the instructions and found the part that applied to my fan, and saw the instructions for the ground screw.
