Ceiling fan with light - 2 switches, one for fan, one for light

Ive searched up and down here and havent found exactly what im looking for.

I have a ceiling fan with lights. I want the fan on a switch and the lights on a dimmer.

The fan has:
1 black (hot)
1 white (shared)
1 blue (hot for lights)

it also has a remote reciver, but im just cutting that out of the picture.

my understanding is that i can (grounds are a given for all these, so im not going to put them in):
have two 12-2 w/ground lines going to the fan.
one will have:
black to black (hot)
white to shared white

the other will have:
black to blue (hot)
white to shared white

switches will go in each hot line

sound right?

thanks in advance

Yes, sounds like you are pretty prepard for this.

Is it already wired? If not, I would consider using 12/3. It would be a bit of a time saver, only having to run 1 cable instead of 2.

And remember, make sure there is a ground to each switch, and the fan BOX (should be metal, if it is plastic than there is a VERY good chance it is NOT fan rated).

Good luck!

thanks cowboy, yes, its a metal fan rated box with the supports. i forgot to mention the 12/3... i just dont have any but have a bunch of 12/2 which i already ran. you are right, it would have been easier, but i didnt want to buy any.

thanks for the reply!

You dont need to hook the extra white up. You can just leave it capped in the box.
