Ceiling fan installation on vinyl soffit?

Hi to all-

This is my first post here, and it's a little hard to say where it should actually go. I guess "electrical" is as good as any...

I started putting up vinyl soffit all around my house and that has gone so well that we decided to do the front porch ceiling and under the carport the same way.

Question is that there are four ceiling fans and I'm not quite sure how to work the vinyl around them. I picked up a few of those square two-piece mounting plates for lights, etc. but I'm not comfortable mounting fans on something like that. Too risky.

I've thought about using box extenders that would bring the bottoms of the boxes down to about the level of vinyl and still allow me to tighten the fans securely. But is there a better way? How is it normally done?

My apologies if this has already in covered in these forums; I was not able to find anything. Thanks very much!

...Dave

IMO, bring the fan boxes themselves down to the level of the soffit (no extentions, use fan rated boxes). Use fan braces, 2X4's, something that solidly secures the fan box to the framing. Cut a hole in the soffit for the box to come through as you put it up. You can use J-blocks around the fan boxes for trim if you like, but you want the fan attached directly and solidly to the box and not the J-block.

Thanks to y'all for your help.

I thought about Saturday Cowboy's idea of just boxing around the fans -- of course it would work and be easy, but a square opening in the vinyl around a round fan bezel wouldn't be that great in terms of appearance.

So Kyle, I'll bring the fan boxes down 1/2" as you suggest and that'll be that.

Thanks again!
