Ceiling Fan Downrod Length

Is there an optimal ceiling fan downrod length for high ceilings? I have a ceiling that is between 14-15 ft high and I am installing a 60 in ceiling fan. Any recommendations?

If the fan is balanced it can be any length you want but I would not go below 7.5 feet. I have one that is 6.5 feet long and no problems.

I'd personally go with a 5' rod... it will look good in the room and function well.

Ceiling Fan Downrod Length

I am going to be installing a ceiling fan in a living room where the ceiling is over 20 feet high. The ceiling is open up to the 2nd story. How long of a down rod do I need? I have found up to 72" rods, but can't find anything longer.

You can get them in longer rod but the issue is the balance of the fan if go bad it will compound it.

The last time I have done it was 10 foot rod and DO NOT use thinwall pipes use the ridge pipe { thick wall } and also run along a safety wire as well.

But get the largest fan you can find I know 60 inches unit is about the biggest they used in the resdentail side but in commercal side I have see much bigger one the biggest one I have see is 12 footer now that is pretty huge { I know one compaine did make big as 24 footer }

Merci,
Marc

I have used 3/4" galvanized pipe as down rod. It comes in 10 ft lengths and you can cut shorter. It requires you drill a hole at each end for the locking pin. Paint the color of your choice. An additional problem is that the wiring may not be long enough for the longer down rod.

I think the rule of thumb is that you want the fan to be in the upper 75% of the room to help move the striation and layering of heat.
