ceiling fan doesnt work

Hi People,

My ceiling fan does not run when switched to ON, but light works. I figure I could start with a visual inspection, then if no obvious stuff, check for 110 V at wiring going to motor. Anyone know which color wires I should touch to my voltmeter leads?

So, if voltage is there, should I just assume motor is dead and yank the whole unit from the ceiling?

Thanks!!

Typically the fan motor lead is colored black. You could check for voltage between black and white or black to green. Since the light works we know the neutral connection is good.

Have you checked the rotation switch to make sure it is all the way to either position? Did you check the pull chain operation?

Good tip, Jim. No, I have not. You see, Im trying at this point to get some tips before I go to the actual site (the fan is at a rental unit). iM GETTING READY TO GO THERE SOON, AND YOUR TIPs WILL GO FAR, AS i CANT GO BACK/FORTH TO BUG THE TENANTS TOO MUCH.

I will definitely check the pull chain, AND rotation switch. Huge thanks, Jim!

Oh, whats the chance its just the capacitor? I hear theres a way to check it....like if you hand start the blades with switch on and motor takes off at normal speed, its the capacitor. Agree?

Was it working at some point and now it doesn't, or is it a fresh install and the lights work but the fan doesn't?
