Ceiling fan with dimmer/switch

Hey guys,

This is my first post here. Now for my problem... I just installed a ceiling fan combo light, to a three way switch with a dimmer and switch. I 'm trying to use the dimmer to control the fan and the switch to control the light. Its not working that way. If I first use the dimmer it controls the fan but as soon as I hit the switch the fan turns off and the lights go on. Wires from the ceiling black to yellow(for the fan), white to white, blue to orange(for the light).

Thanks.

A regular dimmer switch will not work on a fan. Make sure you have a fan dimmer

Are you trying to split the two 3 way switches? That is what it sounds like. You can not do this as one will be on and the other will be off.

I will try a fan dimmer. Do I need a single pole switch since I want to control them separately?

Thanks guys.

You can not do it with the set up you have. We need all wire colors connected to what and maybe we can get it set up for you.

I have 3 way dimmer/switch, one red is connected to orange which controls the light(that is the plan), the other red one is connected to the yellow(controls the fan) and black to black.

Thanks.

Is the light/fan controlled from 2 or more places in this room?

You need to get 2 single pole switches, whether or not they're dimmers or switches. If you only have a single gang box then you'll have to get stackable switches(2 switches that can be mounted in a single gang box) which I don't think you'll be able to use a dimmer because I'm not to sure they make those "yet". Your black will pigtail to each switch and orange will go to one switch and yellow to the other switch. You're trying to use a 3-way and when of those reds is on the other is off, when you turn the switch on they reverse. Hope this makes some kinda sense to you.
