ceiling fan

My ceiling fan will work, the small overhead bulbs come on, the regular bulbs will not light. However if I move the shaft the bulbs sometimes come on, also noticed a black smudge on the ceiling plate like it may have got hot. Any suggestions? The chain that turn the lights on will not turn them on. Any help appreciated.

Pull the off the ceiling and check the wiring for lose connections or wires that are rubbing against the fan shaft. Buy a new one their cheap.

ceiling fan

?!

REPLACE THE FAN?!

Right. The "light kit" is usually connected with a single conductor that runs down through the hollow shaft from the box to the light. It's a piece of 16awg wire, about a foot max. Replace the fan? How about replace the wire.
