I would love to put a ceiling fan in my living room but my husband isn't anxious about climbing into the attic to anchor it. He's not really that handy. I was wondering if a fan could be hung like light fixture, by a chain. Obviously, the ceiling would have to have a joist to put the hook into so the fan could hang. The chain and cord would be loosely hung near outlet so it could be plugged in.

Those things are hung from solid pipes for a reason. A fan hung from a chain would not be a feasible solution.

Lowe's sell an indoor/outdoor fan that can be hung from an eyehook in the ceiling. It is also plug in. It is item number 5880.

The reviews on it are mixed. I think a lot of it is that a 20 inch fan will never perform like a 52 inch. Those expecting airflow similar to a large fan are bound to be disappointed.

But even with it, if I needed more drop, I would get a longer downrod for it, I would not use chain.

if you want to see your fan swing in circles a chain would be a great idea. oscillating function without the oscillating price.

In other words, a ceiling fan must be properly secured to a fan rated box.

It is not always necessary to climb into the attic to support a fan box. But is usually the best way.
This type of fan box is designed where you can do everything from underneath.
I have never used one, so I cannot comment on how well this works.

Chain, no.
fan rated box, yes.

I have done a few add on fans and have never had to climb into the ceiling. fan support boxes are made for all the work to be done below. They are not a piece of cake but are doable.

This is not really a job for someone that is "not really handy".

Do not be tempted to just hang the fan from the existing box. it may work for awhile, but will eventually come down.

Ya remind me one of my frenid done that before ., I will keep it clean here but there were alot of cussing on that event and I did actually see it ran.

I did bolted out of that place due that guy did ran a big arse Hunter fan on chain.

Thank you all for your input. I actually knew someone that screwed the hook into a ceiling joist but never heard how it actually worked out. I will hang on to your suggestions and check into doing each one of them. Thanks again, I appreciate it.
