i am looking for info on these. searching, well, i guess i am not using the correct terms.
i want some for my new kitchen. i am thinking 6 would be fine. new construction. insulation contact. stylish would be nice, if not too expensive.
gosh, i don't even know what else to ask.
Having installed five of these in my kitchen I can say it is not that hard if you have access to the area above the kitchen. if you don't, well lets say it requires more skill.
you can buy a box of 6 at a big box store for like $65 - $80. Plus the cost of the special tool to cut the holes.
Also though we call them "can lights" the technical term is "recessed lights"
65-80 dollars? got a pack of 4 for 25 at Menards... special tool? Just use a serrated knife/ blade after tracing the outside of the can (be sure to cut about 1/4" inside of the line if using remodel boxes)
the ceiling is completely open = no drywall, and will be insulated.
i am searching around. and i find that some IC cans are not air tight. is that common ? i want air tight. perhaps i should use those "covers" (or make my own ?).
as far as the "light" i want. something not a harsh white. i want a warm light.
and it will only be for general lighting. i was going to put a basic ceiling fan/light in, but have changed my mind to cans. i will have under cabinet lights also.
The main issue is make sure you get proper trim for the IC cans so you may end up get ICAT ( Insluated concat air tite ) trims but watch the wattage ratings on them.
Some of the ICAT trim may not allow to use the CFL lamps so watch the depth of that trim.
Look around and see what it will fit your style what you like the most.
If more question just holler one of us will help ya.
but yeah, those look ok. though imo they are placed too close to the cabinets.
i am going to check out a few stores and see if they have displays.
but, right now, my main concern is heat = i don't want to be heating the attic. i see problems with that. should i be concerned ? what can i do about it ?
How would you loose heat with an IC air tight can? You can add spray foam on the back side and run the insulation right over and around it.
If you think there out of style you better start calling the builders that are installing these day in and day out by the thousands.
i was at HD yesterday. they had a nice display. i found 6" led bulbs that had the trim on them, $39. and IC cans for about $8. they had one working and the can was completely cool, i am sure it was on all day. so i am leaning this route.
I have 8 can lights in my kitchen for general lighting. Put them all on a dimmer and most of the time it sits at about 75% of full on. One of the lights is over the sink. Mistake I made was leaving it on same dimmer as rest of lights. I should have put it on its own switch or dimmer. For the best selection in trims, you will need to go to a real lighting store, not the big box stores. There are literally hundreds of trims to chose from so you should be able to find one that suits your tastes.
IC = “insulated Ceiling” Can light Housing. This simply means insulation can be put around them where they protrude into the attic.
ICAT = “Insulated Ceiling Air-Tight” Can Light Housing. Same as above with the added feature that no air leaks from the house upward into the attic.
