Can I drill down vertically through sistered joist?

I need to run some 14/3 down from my attic into a wall for a light switch. The ceiling joists in my attic are 2x6. For some reason, the joist that runs directly above this wall is sistered with 2x4's (one on each side), so I have no access to the top plate.

Can I drill down vertically through either the joist or the 2x4's? I believe I could hit the "crotch" between the the 2x6 and either 2x4's if that's less structurally detrimental.

I sense that the answer is "no", but I'm asking anyway. I really have no idea why this joist is beefed up in this way. The wall in question is in a stairway, but it still seems like overkill.

My backup plan is to go down through another wall, though the basement, and back up into the wall I'm trying to get to. That would be workable, but also a good bit more complicated.

Can you drill from an angle above one 2x4 into the wall?

Possibly. I may have to do some trigonometry to determine how feasible that would be.

Just imagining the situation, I think the hole would need to also pass through the 2x6 and it could not be constrained to the middle third of either the 2x4 or the 2x6.

Since you are only talking about 4 1/2", can't you drill beside one of the 2x4's?

The wall cavity is only 4" (nominal, 3.5" actual) thick.

I would drill through the bottom of the 2x4, at an angle to hit the stud cavity, and not worry about it.

Isn't it 16" wide?

Drill the hole between the 2x6 and either 2x4. I would use either a 1/2 0r 5/8 bit. Make sure fire stop the hole after wire is pulled.
