BX with Romex

I would like to install an exhaust fan in my bathroom. In the existing junction box BX is the feeder. There is more BX that is connected to the vanity however it's badly frayed and needs to be replaced. Can I use romex as a replacement and ground the romex to the metal box?

Frankly it all needs to be upgraded and I really should do a home run with 12/2 but that will require a permit (which I have no problem with getting). Also, I want to do small wiring before I start messing around in the breaker panel.

Your location is not shown so an exact answer is hard to give.

Type NM-B cable is widely used. Certain areas like the Chicago area and NYC prohibit its use. You will need to check with your building officials.

I live in New Jersey. I just don't want to do anything that is dangerous.

romex is completely safe. 90 percent of the country is run in romex. Hook it up correctly (ground hooked up) Run your nailing plates if your just running it bare and not in the bx. tack it in place by the staples they make for it every 15-18in and you will be fine. Tho I don't know what your local building code wants.
