No you do not need nonmetalaic box at all.,

The key issue you have there is the conductors ( wires ) is touching each others what it not suppposed to be like a nicked insluating or a ground ( bare ) conductor touching the line or load supply conductor.

Turn the power off first then check all the connection and the conductors to make sure it is not causing the issue. ( just make sure you are not damaging the conductors when you put the switch back in )

Merci,
Marc

NO! You need to figure out what you drastically did wrong!
In fact, I will go so far as to say DO NOT touch this any further and call an electrician in to figure it out.

NOW.....if this is an AFCI or GFCI breaker it is a bit less urgent. There may simply be a neutral to ground fault somewhere.

Me thinx the OP has one of the hot conductors touching the metal strap of the switch, either through miswiring, or a defective switch.

Check the insulation on all the wires. You may have scraped some off when you pushed the switches back into the box if you do not know how to fold wires properly.

Thanks for the tip - It was one of the sliced traveler conductors insulation touching the gang box as the switch was pushed in. I replaced that one cable and all is back to normal. It always seems to be what one least expects and sure enough I rechecked all cables and found the rip on the back side of the cable where it was only visible if all was pulled completely out again. Again - thanks!
