Breaker Keeps Tripping

Hi,

I have an older style breaker box with the breakers having two prongs coming out the back. For some reason one of the rooms we use will randmly short and we will mess around with the wiring and get it back up and running and then it will short again. The wierd thing is that when I disconnect the wires connected to two switches the bathroom light and the bathroom fan, the breaker doesn't trip anymore but only the light in the bathroom will turn on but the rest of the room connected to the same circut won't. Please help!!

Can you tell the brand of breaker you are dealing with? What is in use on the circuit when it trips?

It would help to know if the tripping is caused by overload or a short circuit.

The rest of the room that doesn't turn on when disconnected has a problem. Start by opening all the boxes on that section and looking for problems like loose wires, or burnt wire nuts shorting to the metal boxes.

At the time it shorted just a tv and a surround sound unti was plugged in. Now when the breaker doesn't trip and the bathroom light stays on while the rest of the room remains turned off nothing is plugged in.

I'm guessing they are Stab-loc breakers. I'm guessing you have a wire frayed and arcing to ground somewhere..or possibility of a bad fixture. You need to turn of the associated breaker and check the circuit thouroughly....not just "mess" with it. If you have a short, you have an accident waiting to happen.

Ok I will look for the bad fixture and ground wire. That is what I meant by messing around with it, I was looking for any loose screws or if the ground wire was touching anything else. Could a bad light fixture trigger the problem?
