Breaker Box Leg...what the heck?

I was told by the AC people that my AC is alright and that my problem is that one 'leg' is not getting electricity to it from the breaker box. What in the world is the leg...a fuse? Do I need an electrician for this? Please help...fast!!

Sounds like half of the breaker that supplies your ac unit is bad. Simple to figure out if you have a meter.

kjv, Usually in 220V (or 221.... :) ) circuits there are 2 "legs" of 110V each. If one of them isn't working (due to a faulty breaker, etc.), a "leg" is considered "missing" or "broken." If they tested only at the outlet, it could also be that the wire has broken at the outlet itself (just had that happen at a job I went on today). If the breaker is older it's usually inexpensive to just replace it (if you feel qualified). Make sure you turn off the main breaker (after turning off each individual breaker) and have a flashlight and an assistant (just in case/to hold the flashlight). Try and get the same brand/type of breaker (usually listed on the panel door). If you can't find that info, you can remove the old breaker (After following the above steps. You can put wire nuts on the ends of the A/C wires and re-energize the panel, so the power isn't off too long while you're out.) and bring it to; a supply house, the orange or blue home improvement center... pete
