Boxless light switch

Hey,
I was asked yesterday if I could replace an existing light switch with a replacement my cousin has. The switches are boxless, made by Slater Electric (which was absorbed by Pass & Seymour), model SCO-70. They are (were?) used in RVs and mobile homes. After loosening the wingtabs, I tried to remove the switch, but it wouldn't move. Looking at it, it seems that when it was installed, all that was done was a short section of sheathing was removed and the wires seperated and set into some phone style connectors, where the edge cuts through the insulation and makes the contact.
Is anyone familiar with these style swithes? and is there an easy way to replace them? My guess is that they were installed before the second wall was built. I find it a bit difficult to believe that these have UL approval.

Thanks, Hippie

Boxless light switch

I know of no easy way to do this. In the past I have been lucky enough to have enough slack wire to install a shallow work box and standard switch.

They may not meet UL listing. Manufactured homes are not built to NEC they are built to a fema standard that is not as strict.
