Black wire directly connecting 2 switches?

1 Attachment(s)
Can anyone tell me if this wiring is correct? I am going to replace both of these switches and want to make sure I don't copy a mistake.

If they aren't correct, what do I need to change? Each switch controls a different light, and they are the only switches for those lights (single posts). They are on a 15a circuit.

The only white (I assume neutral) wire in the box is connected with a wire cap, but there is no connection from there to either one of the switches.

Also, why is there a black wire directly connecting the 2 switches?

As all I see is a single 3 wire cable in there...
I'll assume this is a switch leg for a ceiling light & fan. Am I right?

The white wire is what's throwing you off as contray to most of the time it's actually hot.
(use your meter to confirm this)
The red and black wire go up to the ceiling fixture... one is fan and the other light.

You following all this? Am I still right?
If so... you need to ADD two short pieces of black wire to the white wire.
Each of these (pigtails) goes to one of the two switch's.
The red and black also go to one of the two switch's.
Done.

One switch controls a light over our kitchen island. The other controls a light over our dining table.

Black wire connecting the two switches is most likely the hot wire. No need to bring it in and split it with a nut when you can wire them to each other.

What is the white wire connected to?

We need more pictures showing what wires are connected to what.

If it works now do NOT try to correct anything. It is wired properly. If you don't like the wire stripped in the middle then wire nut two short black pigtails to the power wire from the wall one to each switch.
