Best way to upgrade ungrounded outlets to grounded?

I'm in a 1950s house that has quite a few 2-prong ungrounded outlets, and I want to upgrade them all to 3-prong grounded ones. There are already some 3-prong outlets in the house, so I'm assuming that at least some of the wiring in the house includes a ground wire.

For the ungrounded outlets, what's the basic procedure? If no grounding wire is present, I have to run one to the box, correct?

Yes or provide GFCI protection and label accordingly.

Best way to upgrade ungrounded outlets to grounded?

What is the current wiring method in the house? For the era if they used armored cable, and it had a fuse panel originally, the armor would be the ground return path in the old system. If needing grounded outlets for electronics, such as a computer, HD tv, etc, how hard would it be to pull new romex to update? Also, has the breaker panel been updated from older style fuse, or breaker panel. That you can post pictures of.

Or a bootlegged ground. Should pull the receptacle out and check how it's wired to be safe.

I've discovered that even if it looks like it's all grounded - sometimes it's still not.

I have a ground outside that runs up the wall - but it connects to nothing. The inner wiring of the home has no ground but all previous outlets that the previous owners installed had a ground wired to them.

I use GCFI outlets and such as necessary - and sometimes I use a portable one that plugs in.
