Best way to locate EMT conduit behind sheetrock?

I need to locate where an EMT conduit runs in the wall.

The conduit runs in the attic then it gets into a very tight spot where I can't trace anymore.

Somewhere along the edge of the exterior wall it must turn vertical and run downward. I need to determine where it runs down.

The conduit is a 1/2" EMT. The wall is a concrete block wall, then 1/2" furring strips, then 1-1/4" of sheetrock over it. The conduit runs in the 1/2" space between the block and the sheetrock.

The sheetrock is not actual sheetrock. It is a double ply with 1/2" gypsum board backing, then 1/2" of hand applied brown coat with a 1/4" top coat egg shell finish. I tried a typical stud finder and it's not telling me anything.

Any thoughts?

I thought some of the stud finders would detect rebar in a wall. I don't know how they would work on conduit.

Correct, some will locate metal as well as wood studs. I have a Stanley which is "supposed" to do that. ( I say that because I haven't used it on either metal stud buildings or conduit)

You might be able to do it with a FLIR, or try a metal detector on a whim, which is actually how the ground tracing equipment works, that utilities use to locate stuff. Here is a list of some other gadgets for tracing lines http://www.nextag.com/cable-tracer/stores-html

Also, if there is too sharp of a bend, or it snakes, which is doubtful, it would be hard to pull wire through when they did it originally. Can you post drawings for relation to the outlet & the conduit up in the attic where you lose it.
