Bathroom Waterproof TV
My wife and I are renovating our bathroom and are replacing our standard vanity mirrors with a MirrorVue mirror TV. We got the idea from a DIY Network BathCrasher's episode. Anyway, I wasnt sure if the mirror TV had to be waterproof since its in the bathroom. Is anyone familiar with bathroom electronics and code regulations?

Unreal. Who has time to watch tv in the bathroom?

I've had people that want to spend $50,000 on just just one bathroom.
It's just nuts.
They even have a built in computer in a ref. door.
Do you really spend that much time in a bathroom that you really need a TV?
This would get far more use.

If it was just a TV I would agree but it duels as a mirror and if you really think about it there are many benefits to this project: we can catch the morning news while getting ready for the day, my wife can watch her shows while doing her make up, the kids no longer stall for bath time and I never have to miss a touch down!

MirrorVue has standard and custom sizes some as $900 so its not the money or use I'm concerned about its the safety in the bathroom due to water and electronics being so close to each other. I did just read they have a waterproof model now lets just hope installation is as easy as it seems.

I get the news on the way to a job.

If I'm not mistaken, as long as its not over the tub or in the shower you'll be fine, the receptacles powering the units would still need GFCI protection.

MirrorVue says the bathroom Mirror TV is "low voltage" so I assume that combined with no direct water contact (like you said, not in the shower or tub) should be fine. Thanks for the help, I will let you know how it turns out when finished.

Just make sure you save all the paperwork to show the inspector in case you did apply for the permit due some of the inspectors may not know that is approved item so that one part I will advise ya to save the paperwork.

Also as long it is listed with UL label on you should be ok as long it is not used in bathtub or shower area.

Just install the product as listed by the manufacture... Not sure why everyone cares how you spend your time during the day. :/

So when it is your turn to have the bathroom and you were watching something you don't have to miss a portion.

A TV can be safely installed for bathtub or shower use by having a sealed window to the room on the other side where you have an alcove built for the TV. The TV is on the windowsill on the other side facing the bathroom. You use the remote control and it is perfectly safe. (The alcove is enclosed with a lockable back panel and also ventilation louvers for the TV positioned so someone in the room can't look into the bathroom.)

I think that sounds great. People have it backwards: It's not a question of whether you have time to watch TV while you're in the bathroom. It's that whenever you're watching TV, you could be hanging out in the bathtub at the same time. If it's a nice tub, why not?
