Bathroom outlet shooting sparks half the house now dead

I was changing my outlet which was very old and some sparks came out and now half the lights in my house won't turn back on. I would greatly appreciate any help and/or suggestions.

Turn off the main breaker and then turn it back on---it sounds like you may have knocked out half of the power coming into the place---

You actually have two different 110 lines powering a house---two legs---(when combined you have 220 for air conditioners and stoves----A dead short might have bpoped the main on one leg---

If you are reasonably careful---and have a two wire tester---one of the folks here will be glad to walk you through trouble shooting your breaker box--or fuse box,if that is what you have.

Turn all the breakers to the off position, then turn them back on.

I did end up doing that and everything is back to working great. Thanks everyone for all your help. I had such a bad experience on the sister app of this I couldn't believe it. I was ridiculed and mocked for needing help. And the mods had the nerve to suspend my account temporarily.

You were treated the way you were because you lied about being an electrician to ask a DIY question on a professional electrician forum.

How did I lie?? I am currently attending Wyotech and specifically stated I was in training. Where is the lie?? Even then, that doesn't make it ok cause I guarantee they wouldn't talk to me the way they did face to face.

What's done is done, but if you truly were "in training" you wouldn't have needed the suggestion I gave to fix your problem.

Sorry I'm not as knowledgable and professional as you after 1 day of classroom training. And I did your suggestion yesterday on my own since I didn't see your advice till today. The higher you guys are up on your high horse the harder you will fall.

Here's a little tip for you, in all seriousness, loose the attitude or you will never make it in this trade. You will be talked down to. You will be handed all the crap jobs. You will be treated like you are dumb as a box of rocks. Its part of being an apprentice. You will have to accept it.

I appreciate the advice and I've gone through it since I was an apprentice in Drywall. I can take it since I'm getting paid, but ill be damned if I take it from someone that doesn't know me and isn't paying me.

@Raider: take the advice of k_bus. You really got to leave that attitude out! You ask a question.. without elaborating on the fact "hey, this is my first day in session".. but come with the assumption that you knew what you were doing.. and now get called out on it, for you lacked the knowledge of. Not disrespect to you Raider; be the man and do let it ride. For attitudes in this practice will get you further below then above. You never know to whom you mouth off to, you just may need them to vouch for you!

The one exceeds, is the one who take heed to listening vs knows everything! Be good man. Do wish you great success in your endeavor!
