Bathroom Light Fixture with no junction box?

I pulled down my old ugly bathroom light fixture to replace it only to find out that there is no junction box behind the fixture, just wires.

My new fixture states to mount to a junction box. I was going to buy a old-work J-box, BUT there is no room for it as a stud is in the way. If I mounted it next to the stud, it would be not centered.

So my question is, can I leave it as is, and mount the fixture bracket to the stud and consider the light fixure as a junction box or is that against code?

Look forward to any feedback on this one. I've researched on WWW and find hardly anything about this subject. Most state to install an old-work J-Box, but in my case that won't work unless I want an off-center light fixture!

Install a "Pancake" box on top of the stud, and mount your fixture to that:
