bathroom fan/heater switch question
I have a bathroom heater fan and I want to put a timer switch on the heater side. Currently it is one wall plate- two cojoined switches. I have two lines coming into the wall plate, one with black, green and white wires the other with black, white, red and ground....
I would like to wire it to 2 seperate switches, one with the timer for the heater and one for the fan. Not sure how to do this- with the wiring i have.
thanks for any help
Well first you are going to need to replace that existing box with a 2 gang box. Unless the box you currently have is a 4 inch box with a single device mudring. Then all you'd need to do is chisel out the drywall to the 4" size and put in a 2 device mudring.
The cable with the black and red wires should go to the fan/heater. My guess would be the black wire is for the fan, and the red wire for the heater.
The black wire providing the power to the current switch will need to have two pigtails attached to it to connect to the 2 separate switches. One would be a standard full size single pole switch for your fan which should connect to the black wire in the 3 wire cable. Then connect your timer to the other pigtail off the power coming in, and to the red wire.
If you find that the timer controls the fan and not the heater, then reverse the black and red wires on the switches.
Thanks- that got it.
