The title of this thread is deceiving. An ATTACHED garage does need a four wire feed. This is however NOT an attached garage. It is 5 feet from the house.

But he does plan on making it an attached garage

So that brings up another question (to me) once it is attached
That then makes the new garage & house one structure
And he is feeding each from the pole to their own panel
Is that OK ?

by code, it can be installed as such but an inspector might balk at it. I believe it shouldn't be done. It lends itself to a lot of safety issues.

Attached garage wiring code


In Pa they prefer a 4 wire feed. They do allow a 3 wire feed if 2 8' ground rods are installed. It depends on your area and local codes. In your situation 2 8' rods would need to be installed at the garage for the sub panel.
