Anyone know what this thing is?

I've been working on the recessed lighting area in my kitchen, put up some slate and trim, and the girlfriend wants this "thing" pulled up into the attic and the hole patched so we can finish this project.

But, what is it? The range/vent fan etc are all in this area, so I was thinking it was something for that, but I'm not sure.

Whatever it is, what would be the recommendation on pulling it up into the attic and so make sure there isn't any fire hazard with having it up there with the insulation and all. Thanks in advance! (btw, I'm new to the forum and I'm liking everything so far!!!)

that's a weird spot for sure! I should just get rid of this old thing and put in a wireless doorbell, doesn't really get used much anyways then I wouldn't have to worry about securing this thing up in the attic somewhere huh?

Most chime transformers are not recommended to be installed in attics, and I believe that NuTone is one of them.

I've seen them in out of the way places such as in a closet high on the wall, but never in the middle of the ceiling like you have.

16 volt Nutone doorbell transformer. I don't know why it shouldn't be in an attic. I see no problem if you don't bury it in insulation. Mount it on board raised up above the insulation.

It looks like whoever installed it purposely went out of their way to make it accessible. I would verify with local building authorities what that reason might be before you go and bury it.

that would make sense for accessibility, but it should be on the ceiling or the wall, not buried in insulation.

Maybe I'm reading your reply wrong, but isn't it mounted on the ceiling?

The house is older (built in 1981) and is an arizona house. The house may have possibly had a car port at one time and it may have been for a doorbell for that door. The reason I think this is the front doorbell box for the ringer and electronics is in the hallway by the front door about 6 feet from the actual button outside and that unit in the kitchen is almost halfway across the house in the kitchen which is near the door to the garage. So I don't know if the unit in the kitchen would be tied to this one.
