Aluminum to Copper
The condo that I currently own is all aluminum wiring. I am interested in having it all changed to copper wiring. The condo is about 1200sqft, small side of a 2bedroom townhouse.
What kind of price should I expect?
How big is this job?
There a LOT of info you omitted.
Attic? Basement? Crawl space? Ceiling height?
I have two questions for you on that matter:
1) Are you sure that all the wiring in your condo is aluminium?
- often, folks see the big aluminium feeder in their panel (which is normal, still today) and mistakenly think they have all aluminium wiring.
- older wiring was done with tin plated copper, which looks like aluminium at first blush.
2) What compels you to want it all replaced?
-that is the knee jerk reaction, but aluminium wired homes can be maintained in a safe condition. Take out a service contract with your electrician for annual PM. It will be much, much cheaper than rewiring the condo.
Excellent info guys. I kind of had that sort of figure in my head.
I'm looking into a service contract Monday morning.
A good reason for changing might be that a lot of people strongly beleive insurance companies are going to crack down majorly on aluminum wired homes. Premptively changing may avoid a nice jack in price of changing later on.
